Opoutere and the Eastern Coromandel offer a number of fishing options from fishing off the jetty to floundering in the estuary, and recreational and charter boat excursions leaving from Whangamatā.

Beaches Galore

Whether you want to walk the beach or dip your toes in for a surf, kayak, fish or swim, there are plenty of options.
Opoutere Beach - 15 minute walk

Water Sports

Have a go at surfing while you're in our area, or hire a kayak and paddle out to nearby islands.  Of course, if you have your own paddle board or similar, you can enjoy all that's on offer on the beautiful adjacent estuary just a stroll across the road from the Lodge.

Bush Walks

There are numerous bush walks accessible from Wharekawa Lodge. We are nestled under Maungaruawahine Pa hill - with the short climb through native bush to the lookout rewarding you with a glorious vantage point on the top.  Alternatively, you can walk through the nearby pine forest to the beach, or choose a more substantial walk from the many along our coastline.

Bird Watching

Surrounded by mature native forest and majestic redwoods, the Wharekawa Lodge is a great spot for birdwatching. Home to tui, kereru, kotare, korimako and a wonderful colony of kaka parrots whose unique whistles and squawks compete with the comical chatter from the resident grey herons. Another treat for guests is an after-dinner glow worm walk, just around the corner.

Additional Activities

There are plenty of activities in the area, including:
